BACP PRESS RELEASE - February 6, 2009

Home-Improvement Contractor Registration Takes Effect in Pennsylvania

The Builders Association of Central PA is launching an effort to alert all local home- improvement contractors about a new law going into effect on July 1 which will require them to register with the state Attorney General’s office in order to continue doing business in Pennsylvania. An information session is planned for February 13.

Contractors billing $5,000 or more in business direct with consumers annually will need to receive a registration number from the AG.  This number must be displayed on their contracts, promotional materials, in advertisements and on business cards. In addition, the law puts forth regulations that home-improvement contractors will need to adhere to relating to business agreements and contracts, insurance coverage, and collecting deposits for projects. This registration will need to be renewed with the AG’s office every two years in order to stay in compliance of the law. Failure to meet the requirements of the law could lead to investigation and even prosecution by the state Attorney General’s office.

In conjunction with the Pennsylvania Builders Association (PBA), the Builders Association of Central PA is developing and distributing educational materials to its members to walk them step-by-step through the state registration process.

“The BACP can offer assistance to home improvement contractors who want to ensure they are in compliance of the new law come July 1. We’ll serve as a comprehensive resource on the registration process for industry professionals throughout the county.” says Cori Donaghy, Executive Officer for the BACP

During the next few months, the Builders Association of Central PA will be educating its members about the requirements of the new law. Any home improvement contractor who is not currently a member should consider joining the Builders Association of Central PA as a cost-effective tool for gaining access to the information they’ll need to be successful under the new registration law.

All home-improvement contractors working in Centre County who want to be properly prepared for state registration should contact the BACP for more information.
